Pinterest: A great place for treatment ideas

How many of you out there have heard of Pinterest? How many of you have used it before? How many of you use it as a place for finding OT treatment ideas?

If you (mentally) raised your hand to any of these questions, then you’re on the right track!

In case you don’t know, Pinterest is a place for sharing and organizing images and ideas that you find on the Internet. By following the “pins” that your friends share, you can create virtual pinboards that are organized any way you like and re-post your friends’ pins onto your various boards. Make sense? So, for example, I have a handful of boards that organize topics such as recipes, photography, kids’ activities (for someday when my 5-month-old grows up), do-it-yourself projects, and so on.

The pinboard that I’m MOST passionate about is my OT board. When I first joined Pinterest in the summer of 2011 (when I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my 1st baby!), I noticed that there were all these great kids’ activities floating around and I thought to myself, I could totally use that in therapy! So I created an OT pinboard and started saving activities that I could potentially incorporate into my pediatric therapy sessions. As a new OT, this was such a breath of fresh air. I found a few ideas here and there and was content to have just a few things in my back pocket after being sleep deprived (you parents can relate!) and out of school and fieldwork for 6+ months.

Once I started working, however, I saw a flier that introduced me to a company that has put together the ULTIMATE world of OT resources: PediaStaff. I don’t work for PediaStaff and I had never heard of them before, so I’m not trying to covertly convince you to work for them. But what I am saying is that they have done something absolutely AMAZING…they have put together literally hundreds of pinboards for various topics related to pediatric therapy. I’m sorry if you’re not in peds and this doesn’t relate to you. But if you are? Oh boy, get ready! Their boards are for people who work with and teach kids — primarily OTs, SLPs, behavioral therapists, and school teachers (it’s possible there are other fields represented that I haven’t seen since there are so many pinboards). Off the top of my head, some topics of the OT boards include sensory/messy play, activities to promote hand strengthening, ways to develop and improve pencil grip, free printable visuals for visual schedules/picture exchange, picky eating, AAC, animal-assisted therapy, lots of boards related to specific diagnoses, and much, much, MUCH more. I can’t even begin to describe the depth and breadth of these boards, but once you dive in, there’s no stopping! I have been know to spend hours perusing just one board and saving articles and links that will be immensely helpful to me in my pediatric practice. Though some of the ideas I come across are things I already learned in OT school or fieldwork, many of the ideas are new to me and simply ingenious. I have also been introduced to many great blogs and articles that are written by OTs and cover a wide array of topics.

It is important to note that all of this idea sharing and pinning certainly does not serve as continuing education, as helpful as it is. But it most definitely supplements the formal education that we have already received and it can jump start our practice by giving us some new ideas for treatment and inspiring us to creative greatness.

So what about you? Have you found Pinterest to be a helpful resource to your OT practice? Are there other websites you use as a means of giving you new ideas and a fresh perspective on your profession? I would love to hear from you!

If you haven’t experienced Pinterest yet, go to http://www.pinterest.com and request an invite. You should receive an email within a few hours that will include a link that you can click on in order to set up an account. You will then be provided with suggestions for who you can follow, based primarily on your Facebook friends who are also Pinterest users. I hope it becomes as great a resource to you as it has for me!

Resources for School OT with Students with Complex Needs

In case you haven’t heard, I am leading the next #otalk2us on Twitter! I am a school based therapist, and while there are lots of topics that could be covered, this was one that is not often seen.

I work in a number of schools, including several which have “regional certificate classrooms” and one “public separate day school.” While these sites may not be the most inclusive setting possible, these students and teachers do need a lot of support from related services to access their education. Most of my students do not have only one issue or primary disability. Some are classified as “Multiple Disabilities” with a combination of orthopedic, visual, hearing, and learning impairments. Others may be coded as a student with Autism or Intellectual Disability, but have additional issues and behaviors. It is definitely challenging to be a teacher in one of these classrooms, to balance all the needs and supports for each student, to integrate behavior plans and IEPs. And it can be very challenging to be a therapist for these students as well, to make sure that goals are SMART, to make sure that the student has best access to all the daily occupational pieces that go into a school day, to give your best so that the student can do the best possible. It can be hard mentally, emotionally, physically. Here are some resources that may help you when working with students with complex needs, to complement the chat (9/13 at 7pm!).

If you’re new to twitter or chats, check out these resources and then just jump right in!

Aromatherapy Diffuser Blends

  • 3 drops Rose Geranium
  • 2 drops Basil
  • 4 drops Bergamot

Here are

  • 2 drops Geranium
  • 3 drops Ginger
  • 3 drops Lime

If I wanted to use this oil, what could I find to combine with this? I wanted as I had a full day of work before me, an uplifting blend. One of my favourite oils that when I m operating I really like to diffuse is Basil. I did a fast smell test and my sense of smell agreed that they would combine well together so all I wanted was to get a third essential oil. Bergamot is another lovely refreshing and uplifting aromatherapy oil and on doing the odor test all three work together superbly.

This post through the Aromatherapy Essential Oil Recipes blog where you can find the most recent information on aromatherapy and essential oil recipes.
In keeping with the Geranium motif, another day I decided to try out another mix, this time with the normal Geranium. This essential oil blend also had to be uplifting and among essential oils I adore for this is Ginger. Ginger essential oil is also excellent for sharpening the memory that may be quite valuable for my various work tasks. Lime sharpening the senses and is another aromatherapy oil for both memory.

Here’s the numbers and the blend that I added to my diffuser:

From Rose Cox
After receiving my most recent batch of fresh essential oils out of Mountain Rose Herbs, as always I decided to experiment with a few fresh aromatherapy diffuser blends. I haven’t utilized Rose Geranium too much before so I really wanted to add that in one of my new combinations. Rose Geranium is extremely similar to Geranium but I find it a much milder odor and of course with a stunning rose-like aroma. The latin name is Pelargonium graveolens and Geranium that has more of an apple-like odor is Pelargonium odorantissimum.

BY ACHS President Dorene Petersen, BA, Dip.NT, Dip.Acu, RH (AHG)

Responding to anxiety is something people obviously do to help control your system –but remaining at a continuous state of anxiety may eventually have adverse health consequences. Cortisol, also referred to as the stress hormone, also is also a portion of the human body’s natural reaction to pressure, but if published in elevated levels, or if is itn’t permitted to distribute as a result of chronic anxiety, it may reduce resistance, bone density and general wellbeing.

Practicing deliberate and consistent self-care to encourage the human body’s natural relaxation response and also to continue to keep our own body’s cortisol levels healthy and balanced is critical for long-term wellbeing. Self-care helps to handle stress before it will become continuous. Aromatherapy is one successful treatment method we could use to prevent stress from occurring within the entire human anatomy.

Consider applying essential oils as part of your daily wellness regimen. Applying essential oils whenever you’re already rested, like through a massage, generates a favorable conditioning reaction, a positive institution.

To encourage everyday usage, attempt inhalation of essential oils, or, even in case you’ve got more time, then developing a private mix of essential oils. Both methods involve properties. Deciding which strategy is the most suitable to your immediate demands could possibly be a very simple variable of available moment.
